7TH FORMOSA CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
AUGUST 10-23, 2019
In August 2013, the Formosa Quartet launched the first annual Formosa Chamber Music Festival. FCMF is a music camp modeled after the Ravinia, Taos, Kneisel Hall, and Marlboro summer festivals in the United States and is an integral part of the quartet’s mission: to bring high-level chamber music training to talented young musicians; to champion Taiwanese and Chinese music; and to bring first-rate music to its homeland of Taiwan.
The festival takes place every August over a course of two weeks on the campus of National Dong Hwa University in the scenic county of Hualien, culminating in final student and faculty concerts in Hualien, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Taipei.
The festival is open to young musicians of all nationalities, ages 13-27. Interested students may apply online. Students are assigned two groups with different pieces (for example, a string quartet and a piano trio) and will rehearse and receive coachings daily. A typical day’s schedule might look like this:
7:30-8:00 AM – Breakfast
8:00-9:00 AM – Individual practice
9:00-10:30 AM – Group A rehearsal
10:30 AM-12:00 PM – Group B rehearsal
12:00-1:00 PM – Lunch
2:00-3:15 PM – Group A coaching
3:30-4:45 PM – Group B coaching
6:00-7:00 PM – Dinner
The Quartet toured Taipei and Hualien in the summer of 2012 to raise awareness and funding for the festival, playing for audiences and influentials such as former Taiwanese president Lee Deng Hui. Funding for the camp is provided in part from the government of Taiwan, with the remainder to come from individual donations.
