Ypsilanti, MI: EMU School of Music & Dance

  • EMU School of Music & Dance 000 East Circle Drive Ypsilanti, MI, 48197 United States (map)

We are honored to be named the 2023-2024 McAndless Distinguished Professor Chair at Eastern Michigan University.

Together with EMU’s School of Music & Dance, and College of Arts & Sciences, we will explore our American Mirror Project, a deeply personal undertaking which examines perceptions and assumptions about American culture through the lens of music and the performing arts.

The American Mirror Project is a collaborative initiative that holds up mirrors to America and highlights personal reflections of what America means. What does your America look like? What comes to mind when you think of America? What aspects of America reveal themselves to you through your lens? Through thought-provoking and dynamic musical performances, this project is an opportunity for the Formosa Quartet to showcase their reflections on these questions while creating a platform to mirror others and the places in which these performances happen. The Formosa Quartet invites fellow musicians, composers, creatives, students, and educators across disciplines to reflect on these questions, examine their perceptions and assumptions about American culture, and to broaden ways in which they mirror "America" in their creative practice. Initially conceived as a Formosa Quartet program offering, the "American Mirror Project" has expanded to include dialogue and collaborations across the country.

In this 1st of 2 onsite residency weeks, we look forward to collaborating with various areas of university, engaging with their students and faculty in a thoughtful exploration of the American Mirror Project.

Thanks to the generous support of private donors, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the Provost's Office of Eastern Michigan University, admission is free.
